1913. In response to the large number of Catholics living on the east side of Salt Lake City, Bishop Lawrence Scanlon establishes Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. The boundaries of the new parish are extensive: They include all the area in Salt Lake County east of Seventh East between Third South and Seventeenth South, as well as the area east of Ninth East and south of Seventeenth South.
Father PJ, Quinn is the first pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. He serves for a few months and is succeeded by Father William Flynn, a priest from Waterford, Ireland, who serves until 1919. (See Appendix: List of Parish Priests.)
On _lune 29, 1913, a cornerstone is placed to mark construction of Our Lady of Lourdes Church on property owned by judge Mercy Home and Hospital at the corner of Eleventh East and Seventh South.
1914. After twelve months of construction, the new church is dedicated on ]une 14, 1914. As pari: of the celebration that day, 50 children make their First Holy Communion, and 40 people receive the sacrament of Confirmation.
The altar installed at Our Lady of Lnurdes Church is the same altar that was used at St. Maty Church, the very first Catholic Church constructed in Salt
Lake City in 1871. St. Mary Magdalene was located on Second East between South Temple and First South, When the Cathedral of the Madeleine was built, St. Mary l\/Iagdaleneë Church was no longer needed The altar was salvaged, and the church was razed.
The new church has a simple design that consists of a singîe nave with no transept. The structure is topped by a steeple.
1919. The Reverend Richard ]. Cotter, DD., succeeds Father Flynn as pastor and has new stained glass windows installed in the church. He also builds a parochial residence an 1253 East Fourth South.
1934. The parish boundaries for Our Lady of Lourdes Church are redrawn to encoml pass a Smailer area, Parish property is relinquished to form à new parish, Sr. Ann’s.
1948. Parish boundaries are again tedrawn, and a new parish-St> Ambrose-is created.
1949. judge Memorial School is constructed on the site of the o1d]udge Mercy Home and Hospital, adjacent to Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
1951. Our Lady of Lourdes Church undergoes a major remodeling. The steeple is removed, the foyer is rebuilt, transepts are added, and a basement is added. The project is designed by the architectural firm of Ware 61 McCler1ahan, and the contractors are Gibbons Si Reed. Bishop Duane G. Hunt dedicates the new church.
1960s. Several new staìned-glass windows are installed.
1962. A new rectory is built, and Judge Memorial Elementary School is constructed on Seventh South between Tenth and Eleventh East1 adjacent to the rectory and church. When the elementary school opens in 1963, Judge Memorial becomes a high school only, and stewardship of the elementary school is transferred to the parish.
2003 . The kitchen in the basement of the church is remodeled.
